What is a complete
neurodevelopmental profile all about?
In addition to getting thorough
feedback from educators, we interview
the parents and student. The
profile may include the Peer, Peex,
Peramid, STRANDS, and various
neuropsychological standardized tests.
We emphasize qualitative approaches even
to the standardized tests. Bell
curve derived scores are required by
schools to qualify students for some
services. We take the assessment a
step further, checking in with the
student about how they answer some
questions or solve some problems.
This approach takes some of the mystery
out of the assessment process and gives
the students and observers to develop a
more practical plan based on the
student's experience.
Does your student
need medications?
So many students are referred for
the purpose of determining if
medications would be helpful.
While we will prescribe medications for
good reasons, we are careful not to
prescribe first and ask questions later.
Rather, we believe it is essential to
look understand the complexity and
variation rather than reduce people into
diagnostic categories. Even when
medications are clearly indicated, there
is more to the assessment and planning
process than prescribing the right dose
of the right medication.
The
Pediatric Extended
Examination at Three is a tool we use on
three old children
parents bring for
consultation.
While children this age
have widely varying
neurodevelopmental
functioning, there are
clear differences even
at this age. We
offer support and want
to help parents in their
efforts to provide early
interventions when
indicated.
The
Pediatric Examination of
Educational Readiness
is a wonderful resource
for Pre-K to 1st grade
students and parents to
understand developmental
variation at this
crucial age. This
examination
is an excellent tool we
offer. Parents may
watch and a video tape
of the assessment is
given at the end.
We meet and discuss the
findings in a follow-up
meeting.
The
Pediatric Early
Elementary Examination
is for children ages
6-9. This
examination is used
along with the ANSER*
questionnaire system is
used to aid in the
assessment of the unique
neurodevelopmental
profile of each child.
Parents are encouraged
to watch this process
and to record their
observations as part of
the assessment.
Pediatric
Examination of
Educational Readiness at
Middle Childhood is
offered for students
ages 9-15. This
assessment is used along
with the
ANSER* System and
the STRANDS.
Parents watch while
their student proceeds
through tasks designed
to understand the
neurodevelopmental
profile of the middle
school and early high
school student.
Sometimes this
information is
sufficient to develop a
learning plan, however
most often additional
assessments are provided
to more specifically
identify strengths and
limitations.
We have the complete
Developing Minds
video and guidebooks in
our Community Resource
Room. We offer
parents the opportunity
to view this excellent
source of information
about neurodevelopmental
functions,
Students, parents,
educators and
professionals come
together in a delightful
video series describing
the process of
management by profile.
Adolescents having
trouble with school are
given a structured
interview using the
STRANDS and
unstructured
interviewing to discover
together how the
neurodevelopmental
functions work together
in the student's unique
mind. Finding out
about interests and
skills is an important
part of the interview
process. We strive
to work with students,
parents and teachers to
support success in the
adolescents we meet.
Helping young people
learn to make wise,
responsible choices
requires that certain
specific concepts be
introduced, applied,
used and reinforced.
Through careful research
and field-testing,
BrainWise author Dr.
Patricia Gorman Barry
has developed a thorough
set of curricula focused
on cultivating these
essential thinking
skills. These curricula
were specifically
designed to be flexible
and adaptable by the
teacher and
easy-to-learn and
engaging for the
students.
Once a student is assessed,
we will work with the parent and
the school district to plan to
teach to the student's strengths
while working to overcome and
bypass weaknesses.
Adults also face difficulties
in learning and achieving in the
workplace. We provide
services to adults in assessment
and in ongoing problem solving.
